Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games

Cultural Olympiad Digital Edition (CODE) Brochure, Catalogue & Poster

CODE Live was an 18-day event that is part of CODE, the Cultural Olympiad’s digital edition. It showcased a diverse range of works fuelled by digital technology and audience interaction. The exhibitions and performances were in 3 well-known sites around Vancouver. Epic design worked on a variety of projects for CODE, including a legacy poster, a 100-page catalogue documenting all events and displays, event & venue signage and a pocket sized accordian-fold brochure outlining the main events.

Challenge: The original creative brief on this project was to design a Z-Card® brochure (pictured below) to serve as an on-the-go pocket guide to the CODE events and art installations. We discovered that because this format is a registered copyright and due to supplier restrictions and budget, we would need to come up with another format solution.

The second challenge was pleasing two separate departments with different ideas for creative direction. Both the Brand & Creative department and the Cultural Olympiad would need to approve the design. Following the art industry, the Cultural Olympiad prefered a clean, white-dominant look for CODE, while the Brand & Creative department had already began developing a fun and dark but colourful, graffiti-style graphic standards for the Cultural Olympiad materials.

Solution: Epic Design submitted the below computer sketch for a new format, which was followed through to completion. It was designed to still have the small format that would fold into a neat package, while being a size that would optimize cost, and a thickness that would fold well.

As for the creative direction, Epic Design worked closely with both departments to find a middle ground that didn’t sacrifice the integrity of the design. In the case of the catalogue, we kept the inside page templates very clean, which showcased the art pieces, and balanced that with a fun cover and night events sections. The two pieces ended up looking like a set in the end, as intended.

Results: Both teams were exceptionally pleased with the final products, and received many compliments on the design. During the Olympics, the brochures ran out, so the public must have found them useful, which is the ultimate goal!
